[space_40]Vaughan Williams’ majestic work, A Sea Symphony, leaves the listener in awe of the power of the waves. Vaughan Williams wrote a huge volume of work including nine symphonies, however the Sea Symphony (his first) is possibly the best of them all. It encompasses all sorts of choral textures, from grand and vast to intimate and gentle.

Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes are taken from his famous opera Peter Grimes, set in a Suffolk fishing village.

Cecilia’s McDowall’s Ave Maris Stella (Hail, Star of the Sea) is a moving short work composed in the wake of 9/11 in 2001. Structured around a tempestuous central section, it is dedicated to peace.
