“For a number of years I have been invited by the Bristol University Music Department to provide a recital in their lunchtime concert series. Lasting about 45minutes and with piano accompaniment provided by my old friend Christopher Northam, it’s an opportunity to share my experience of the operatic roles which have been central to my career.
This relatively informal concert is usually followed by an afternoon masterclass which gives me the great pleasure of working with individual students on songs and arias from their repertoire. I always find this to be a particularly stimulating and rewarding part of the day, as instructive for me as I hope it is for the students taking part, and it’s something I also do at the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal College of Music in London.”
“This year the whole event, scheduled for March and normally taking place in front of an audience, inevitably had to be cancelled; so I was absolutely delighted when the Bristol Music Department approached me to say they were making plans for a live-streamed concert instead. This took place in the Victoria Rooms, Bristol on Friday 23rd October.
I congratulate the Music Department team for making it possible, and I feel enormously privileged to have been part of such an enterprising solution.”
“I hope you enjoy it.”
