Terry Edwards was Conductor and Chorus Master for Watford Philharmonic from 2006 to 2014 and was President of the Society until his death in September 2022. He gave a Q&A to the Watford Observer prior to his final concert in June 2015 in which he said “[I look back over the last eight years] with a great deal of pleasure…One feels honoured to have helped [the choir members] through eight years of their vocal lives. I shall carry on working with my professional choir, London Voices. We’re into doing film sessions and we’ve toured China recently, so they keep me going.” Terry Edwards handed the baton to Michael Cayton whose first concert with Watford Philharmonic was as guest conductor of Britten’s War Requiem in March 2014. Michael became the Society’s permanent conductor in September 2014. London born, Terry studied at Trinity College of Music. His first post was as Music Teacher at Rickmansworth Grammar School. He left the teaching profession in 1964, the year he represented Great Britain at basketball in the Olympic Games. Since that time, in a distinguished career, he has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s most experienced Chorus Masters and Choral Conductors. He was the Chorus Master at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for twelve years until 2004 and prepared the Royal Opera Chorus for 111 operas by 43 composers under the overall directorship of first Bernard Haitink and subsequently Antonio Pappano. In the early 1980’s he formed the professional Choir London Voices. As director of that choir ever since, he has provided choral singing of the very highest class in all manner of styles not only in the United Kingdom but throughout Europe, Scandinavia and even the United States of America. London Voices recorded the soundtrack for the Disney film A Christmas Carol, have sung in the soundtrack of the seventh Harry Potter film, and are to be heard in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.
